Journey to the Beloved Community: Story Quilts by Beth Mount
Jepson Center, Telfair Museums, Savannah, Georgia, 2012
This exhibition featured quilts created by Beth Mount. Mount uses quilts as a way to connect people and ideas, art and activism to support people with disabilities in becoming valued members of the community. Journey to the Beloved Community served as a catalyst for several community programs, including two other exhibitions featured at the Jepson Center: I Am the Beloved Community: Story Quilts of Our Savannah, and Seeing Savannah: Lyn Bonham's View of Citizen Advocacy. I Am the Beloved Community showcased quilts created by children from the West Broad Street YMCA’s Loop it Up Savannah Program, Boys and Girls Club of the Coastal Empire, and seniors of the City of Savannah Hudson Hill Golden Age Center. Seeing Savannah featured a series of black and white photographs by Lyn Bonham created to document several advocate and protégé relationships established through Chatham-Savannah Citizen Advocacy. A third, off-site, exhibition titled Eye to Eye: The Making of We displayed works created by five Savannah artists who used Citizen Advocacy matches as inspiration for their work. Adjacent to the Journey to the Beloved Community exhibition was the exhibit Quilts from the Telfair's Collection, for which I served as supervising curator. Photo credit: David J. Kaminsky
